Swiss choreographer Heinz
Spoerli's ballet 'Cello Suites (In den Winden im Nichts)' will
have its La Scala debut March 5, running through March 19 at the
famed Milan opera house.
The ballet, which Spoerli originally choreographed in 2003,
is set to numbers 2, 3, and 6 of Bach's widely-known "Six Suites
for Unaccompanied Cello" composed in 1720.
The music will be performed on alternating dates by La
Scala's first cellists Massimo Polidori and Sandro Laffranchini.
Spoerli's choreography focuses on the element of air, the
wind, and includes two brief joining scenes danced in silence at
the end of the first and second suites.
"When I work, I let the music come to me. Choreography is a
dialogue between music and dance," Spoerli said.
The stage set is sparse, with just one large ring that
releases a light smoke, conceived by architect Sergio Cavero and
lit by Martin Gebhardt.
The ballet will be performed by members of the Teatro alla
Scala Ballet Company, led by principal dancers Nicoletta Manni,
Claudio Coviello, Antonino Sutera and Mick Zeni.
