Rome city authorities plan to
further restrict traffic along the central Via dei Fori
Imperiali after a controversial ban on private vehicles
introduced in summer 2013.
"The final aim is to close the road to buses too," said
centre-left Mayor Ignazio Marino.
"We want to reduce the passage of combustion vehicles as
drastically as possible."
Under the controversial 2013 restrictions only buses, taxis
and emergency vehicles are allowed to travel along the multilane
artery linking the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia.
Marino introduced the new regime amid concerns about the
polluting effect of vehicle traffic to the Roman Forum and
Imperial Forums archaeological area.
