A young Meryl Streep was
once told by legendary Italian movie producer Dino de Laurentis
that she was "too ugly" for a role, the three-time Academy award
winner recounted in an interview on British television.
Internationally acclaimed actress Streep told Graham Norton
and his audience about an audition for the lead role in De
Laurentis' 1976 remake of King Kong, when she showed up upon the
suggestion of De Laurentis' son.
According to the actress, De Laurentis commented "che
brutta", Italian for "how ugly", when she met him, to which the
actress replied, "I am sorry I am not beautiful enough".
She called the experience "sobering".
Jessica Lange got the part.
