Police on Thursday evicted
Rome's historic Eliseo theatre from its premises in the city
centre.
The eviction was carried out without incident, reports
said.
"We're here outside the theatre," said staff union
representative Nadia Stefanelli.
"Today there was due to be a show for children which
obviously will not be performed. We are very bitter, until the
very last minute we hoped for a solution, an agreement of
whatever kind to avoid this eviction," she continued.
The fate of the private theatre in Via Nazionale has been
hanging in the balance since July when the property owners
announced their intention to evict the business over credit
arrears.
The eviction was originally set for July 10 but was
postponed several times to allow city and state cultural
authorities, the theatre management and the property owners to
find a solution.
