Renowned Oscar-winning
director Mike Nichols has died at the age of 83, his wife, TV
news anchor Diane Sawyer announced Thursday.
Nichols, who was born in Germany, won an Academy Award for
his popular 1967 film The Graduate, starring Anne Bancroft and
Dustin Hoffman.
He was also nominated for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf,
starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, Silkwood, written
by Nora Ephron and starring Meryl Streep, and Working Girl
starring Melanie Griffith.
Nichols was one of only 12 people to win all four top
American entertainment prizes - an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and
numerous Tony Awards.
His last film was Charlie Wilson's War with Tom Hanks and
Julia Roberts in 2007.
