(see related)Italian actor, director and producer Luca Barbareschi said Thursday he could take over the running of Rome's Eliseo theatre following the eviction of its existing management earlier in the day.
"A 48-hour moratorium is underway, after which there will be the possibility of beginning this new and exciting adventure," Barbareschi said.
"I've met with theatre staff and union representatives and assured them of my total willingness to verifying the possibility of keeping workers on," he continued.
Earlier the theatre's current artistic director Massimo Monaci said the Eliseo would be forced to lay off around 60 employees as a result of the eviction.
"The new management will give continuity to the present season in the best possible way with coherence and respect for the line taken by the new artistic direction," Barbareschi continued, adding that further details would be made available over the next few days.
The fate of the private theatre in Rome's central Via Nazionale has been hanging in the balance since July when its owners announced their intention of evicting the management over credit arrears. The eviction was originally set for July 10 but was postponed several times while city and state officials, the management and the owners tried to find a solution.
