A doctor and a nurse were
attacked by the relatives of a patient who died at a Salerno
hospital on Thursday afternoon, sources said Friday.
The attack took place in the pulmonology ward at the southern
city's San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona Hospital.
The two alleged assailants have been cited by the local
flying squad.
The attack was condemned by the head of the Salerno surgeons
and dentists guild, Giovanni D'Angelo.
He said there had been almost one attack a day on doctors in
the area recently.
D'Angelo urged parliament to pass a pending law recognising
medical staff as "public officers", assaults on whom are
recognised as serious crimes.
"That would go some way towards deterring these attacks," he
said.
D'Angelo said "society is ever more tending towards the use
of violence rather than that of reason".
