The body of a young woman found in the Tor Sapienza area of Rome early Friday is that of a 20-year-old Chinese student Zhang Yao Natain, who disappeared in the area Monday, police said after the body was ID'd by her parents. She is believed to have been run over by a train while chasing thieves who stole her bag, they said. Zhang came to Rome to frequent the Fine Arts Academy (Accademia dele Belle Arti) and went missing after going to Rome's immigration office to get her student's residency permit.
Initially police suspected a kidnapping for ransom. Police said they had received a report overnight that there was a body lying in a bush near the railway lines.
A CCTV camera on a factory in Rome's Via Salviati district has filmed possibly the last moments in the life of Zhang, police said.
Footage from the CCTV camera reportedly confirmed what Yao told a friend on the phone shortly before she went missing and stopped responding to calls - that she was chasing the men who had snatched her bag.
Yao was possibly hit by a train after she started running on the trackbed, investigators said.
Forensic experts who have examined her body said her injuries are compatible with wounds from a violent impact.
