Puglia Governor Michele Emiliano
said Tuesday a rail crash that killed 23 people on the
single-line track between Andria and Corato on July 12 could
have been averted if the Ferrotramviaria company had installed
the SCMT train movement control system. He said the firm put off
installing the system for "an economic reason". Emiliano said
"the maximum safety possible was achievable with a modest
investment" of "a few hundred thousand euros". He said "the
judicial question will be played out on on this". The fact that
two trains were waiting at his station in Andria induced station
master Vito Piccarreta into an "automatic" mistake that resulted
in one of them getting onto the single track north of Bari and
colliding with another coming from Corato and killing the 23
people, investigators said.
