On Monday Italy marked the
two-month anniversary of the 6.0-magnitude earthquake in central
Italy that left 298 people dead and hundreds more displaced from
their homes.
The day began with a series of minor earthquakes in the
northern Lazio city of Rieti and nearby Amatrice, the town worst
affected by the August 24 quake, shortly after midnight as well
as a 2.9-magnitude tremor on Monday morning in the Umbria town
of Gubbio.
Meanwhile reports said provisional homes for displaced
residents of Amatrice and the other two villages where the quake
hit with deadly effect - Accumoli in Lazio and Arquata del
Tronto across the border in Marche - are due to arrive in the
Spring pending full reconstruction.
Earlier this month the government approved an emergency
reconstruction decree earmarking a total of 300 million euros
immediately.
It also said "a considerably larger amount" estimated at
3.5 billion for private buildings and 1 billion more for public
buildings would be allotted for full reconstruction in the
government's 2017 budget bill, which is due to come before
parliament shortly.
