Carabinieri police on Monday
arrested a father and son on suspicion of loansharking
aggravated by the victimization of people in need.
Investigators say Cosimo Damiano Surgo, 53, and 30-year-old
son Pasquale lent money at 200% a year to eight businessmen
living in Lecce and Taranto provinces in the southern Puglia
region.
They laundered the money using front men, some of whom have
been charged with money-laundering and abetting in the
investigation that launched in 2013 and that sees another 13
suspects probed.
Surgo senior has a record as authorities in 2008 seized
assets worth seven million euros from him. The son's record is
clean.
