The mayor of the Sicilian town of Aci Catena, Ascenzio Maesano, was detained by anti-mafia investigators on Monday in relation to a probe into alleged corruption in contracts for local public services. A local businessman and a councillor, Orazio Barbagallo, head of the budget committee, were also detained. Maesano was elected in 2012 at the head of a coalition of civic electoral lists. The probe is focusing on corruption in the years-long supply of hardware and software services to the town. The arrests were ordered because of a flight risk after news of the probe emerged judicial sources said.
