The six billion euros the
government has earmarked for pension interventions over the next
three years "are not enough", the head of the UIL trade union,
Carmelo Barbagallo, said after talks with the government
Wednesday. "And let's not forget the 'esodati' (exiled ones) and
the rest of the platform," he said. Barbagallo said some "good
work" had been done "but it's not finished". He said that talks
must continue. UIL is Italy's third-largest trade union
federation, of Socialist extraction. The countless esodati were
left without jobs or pensions by a controversial 2011 pension
reform bearing the name of then labour minister Elsa Fornero.
The government has been helping them in batches but there are
still thousands left.
