A Milan juvenile court gave
custody of a one-year-old boy to his maternal grandparents after
determining that his mother failed to feed him adequately due to
a vegan diet, La Repubblica paper reported Wednesday. Vegans eat
no animal products whatsoever and rely on grains, nuts and
vegetables for their intake of essential vitamins, minerals,
protein, and fibers. The child had been hospitalized in July
with heart problems due to malnutrition. The court said the
mother can still see her baby. Social workers and pediatricians
are monitoring the case.
