Franco Antonio, a former police
commissioner in the Rome seaside suburb of Ostia who had been
transferred to Lucca, was put under house arrest on Friday in
relation to a corruption probe, ANSA sources said.
Mauro Carfagna, a businessman who has several slot-machine
outlets in Ostia, was arrested and taken to prison in relation
to the same probe and a total of seven people are under
investigation, the sources said.
Franco is suspected of helping Carfagna solve
administrative problems and of alerting him in advance of
inspections of his businesses in exchange for payment of the
rent on a flat he used to meet a woman he was having a
relationship with.
In one case, he allegedly advised Carfagna on what to do
to cover up irregularities at one of his outlets and avoid an
eviction order.
