Regeni on Monday reiterated their call for truth and justice in
the torture and murder of their son Giulio in Cairo.
"Six months have passed since our Giulio disappeared," they
said in a telephone connection with Rome's Pantheon building
where dozens of torches were lit at 19:41, the exact time that
28-year-old Regeni went missing in Cairo on January 25.
"We are here to demand truth and justice, raising our
voices louder and louder," said his parents, thanking organizers
for the torchlit commemoration.
"To this day, we still don't know why Giulio was murdered,"
his parents said.
Egyptian authorities have not fulfilled their promise to
turn over investigation evidence, they said.
"We're concerned for all those who are trying to help us
in Egypt, because they are risking their liberty and their
personal safety. We call on the authorities to respond - it is
not a question of time, but of human solidarity. If we don't get
answers we will increase the pressure".
Regeni's severely tortured body turned up in a Cairo ditch
on February 3. Egyptian authorities have offered up a number of
explanations for the incident, none of which the Italian
government has found convincing.
