The fact that two trains were
waiting at his station in Andria induced station master Vito
Piccarreta into an "automatism" that resulted in one of them
getting onto the single track north of Bari and colliding with
another coming from Corato and killing 23 people, investigative
sources said Monday after questioning Piccarreta. The crash was
Italy's worst in seven years. Earlier Piccarreta denied altering
the time sheet to show the train leaving at a different time.
