Tuesday's train crash in Puglia
that left 23 people dead was not a "State massacre", transport
minister Graziano Delrio said Friday.
"It is not the moment to pass the buck, it is the moment to
draw close to the families of the victims and we will do
everying possible to ensure such a major tragedy never happens
again," Delrio said in an interview with daily Corriere della
Sera.
"But there is no State massacre, the reasons for what
happened must be found," he added.
Twenty-three people died on Tuesday when two trains
collided on a stretch of single track between Andria and Corato.
The two station masters at each end of the track have been
placed under investigation but the Bari-based Special Office for
the fixed installation transport services (USTIF), which comes
under the auspices of the transport ministry, is reportedly also
being probed amid controversy over delays in doubling rail track
in Italy.
