The 24-year-old partner of a
36-year-old Nigerian asylum seeker beaten to death by a soccer
ultra on Thursday got refugee status, Interior Minister Angelino
Alfano said. "The competent commission has granted to the
partner of the migrant killed in Fermo the status of refugee,"
Alfano said. The woman, Chinyery Namdi, took an exam to get such
status in May, he recalled. Alfano earlier condemned racism in
the wake of the incident in the Marche town of Fermo Tuesday.
Police on Thursday detained Fermana ultra Amedeo Mancini in
connection with the beating death of Emmanuel Chidi Namdi on
July 5. Investigators said Namdi was defending his wife from
racial insults by Mancini. The ultra reportedly called the woman
an "African monkey", sparking a row after which Mancini battered
Namdi to death with a torn-out street-sign pole.
