Police in Turin on Friday arrested
18 people suspected of being members of the Calabria-based
'Ndrangheta crime syndicate.
The operation, coordinated by the special anti-mafia DDA
investigative department in Turin, cracked down on what
investigators believe was a local branch of the criminal
organization active in the areas of Biella, Novara, Turin and
Vercelli, in the north-western region of Piedmont.
The suspects face several charges including the attempted
murder of Antonio Tedesco in 2014 near Turin, a man with a
police record who was reportedly targeted for offending members
of the local clan, and the abduction of an entrepreneur in
Novara in 2010.
Security officers also seized companies, cars and real
estate properties in the provinces of Biella and Lecce, in the
southern Puglia region, as part of the operation.
