Prosecutors on Tuesday requested six
years one month in prison for ex-Genoa mayor Marta Vincenzi in
connection with a November 4, 2011, flood in which four women
and two little girls lost their lives.
The prosecution also requested five years 11 months for
ex-city cabinet member Francesco Scidone, four years seven
months each for ex-city managers Gianfranco Delponte and
Pierpaolo Cha, and four years one month for fellow city manager
Sandro Gambelli.
The defendants are accused of multiple manslaughter,
culpable natural disaster, and forgery in altering the official
time when a local river burst its banks.
The prosecution has requested one year five months for
ex-volunteer coordinator Roberto Gabutti, who stands accused of
forgery.
The fatalities occurred when heavy rains struck the city
and the surrounding Liguria region.
Rosario Gioia, at the time an unemployed 38-year-old, saw a
woman and two children being swept away by the floodwaters and
dived in to save them. He told ANSA that when he pulled a baby
from the mud the child was already dead.
The Cinque Terre coastal region, which is popular with
Italian and international tourists, had already been hard hit by
flooding and mudslides. At least 10 people were killed the week
prior in the regions of Liguria and Tuscany after violent storms
and mudslides cut off entire towns and swept away roads and
bridges.
