Police executed arrest warrants
for 23 people on Monday in relation to investigations into mafia
clans operating in Sicily's Nebrodi national park.
Seven people were put under house arrest while the others
were taken to jail.
Monday's operation was part of a wider crackdown after
Nebrodi nature reserve chief Giuseppe Antoci survived an
assassination attempt on May 18.
Antoci had been sent bullets in the mail for trying to
stop mafia farm businesses illegally using protected park land
for grazing.
On Friday some 80 finance police officers searched the
premises of 30 farm assistance centers that manage public
financing requests.
Among the people arrested on Monday was Antonio Foraci,
considered by investigators to be an emerging boss in the
Tortorici area with business relations with powerful families
belonging to Calabria's 'Ndrangheta mafia.
