The Bologna assizes court on
Wednesday sentenced a man to life in prison for murdering his
elderly mother with a hatchet 16 years ago.
Nicola Nanni was found guilty of killing 78-year-old
Tommasina Olina at her farmhouse in the mountain village of
Badolo in January 2000 in order to access his inheritance.
The investigation was initially shelved with no suspects.
However the case was reopened in 2008 after DNA trace from
Nanni was found on the handle of a hatchet found in a shed on
Olina's property. DNA from the victim was on the blade.
