Prosecutors in Venice on Tuesday
gave their approval for the lifting of a suspension of work
release for Doina Matei, the Romanian woman who in 2007 was
sentenced to 16 years in jail for killing a woman after stabbing
her in the eye with an umbrella.
Matei had been granted semiliberty status several months
ago, which allowed her to work in a social cooperative in Venice
during the day and return to prison in the evenings. But the
court suspended work release for Matei after some photos of her
at the beach appeared on Facebook.
On Tuesday the Venice probation court left the decision
open on whether to lift the suspension of work release. It is
expected to decide in coming days.
Vanessa Russo, 23, was killed in 2007 after Matei attacked
her with the umbrella during a fight at a Rome metro station.
