Anti-mafia police are
investigating 37 suspects for alleged illegal waste dumping and
environmental disaster at Italian energy giant ENI's oil
processing plant in Viggiano, Basilicata, ANSA sources said
Wednesday.
Numerous high-level directors are being investigated,
including current and former ENI southern district managers
Enrico Trovato and Ruggero Gheller, former Basilicata Regional
Environmental Protection Agency (ARPA) directors Aldo Schiassi
and Raffaele Vita, and former managers for the Region of
Basilicata.
In recent months investigators have conducted inspections
to check waste disposal in the structure, emissions, dioxide
levels and possible pollutants in the soil.
