The bodies of two men who
died when their ultralight aircraft crashed into the sea north
of Stromboli in Sicily's Aeolian archipelago were recovered
Tuesday, coastguard authorities have said.
Giuseppe Alabiso, 61, and his son Emanuele, 26, were flying
from the southern Sicilian port town of Gela to Foggia in Puglia
on Monday when their Storm 300 went down after 5.30 pm local
time.
A passenger ferry was employed in the operation to recover
the bodies, which were found 12 miles north of the volcano
island between 4 am and 6.30 am local time.
The remains of the aircraft have still not been found.
Alabiso was a passionate flyer who in 2013 set the world
record for the 9,000 km solo flight between Gela and North Cape
in Norway.
Last year he flew 13,000 km from Agrigento to Nuuk in
Greenland.
