Milan police on Wednesday
arrested a 29-year-old Eritrean national on charges of abetting
illegal immigration.
Investigators say Mahmoud Kar Mahamud Seid belongs to a
migrant trafficking gang that between May and September
organized 23 Mediterranean crossings from Libya, two of them
deadly - a May 13 shipwreck that killed 17 out of 206
passengers, and a June 27 boat disaster in which all 244 on
board perished.
Another nine Eritrean members of the gang are already in
custody, police said.
Seid has a residency permit, and his job was to get asylum
seekers from Milan to northern Europe.
