Italian environmentalists released a loggerhead sea turtle back into the sea near Pescara on Thursday following months of rehabilitation after it was found washed up on a beach during a storm.
The five-year-old, 40-cm sea turtle of an undefined gender due to its young age was found on the beach in Giulianova in March with injuries caused by a fishing net.
Rescue workers reanimated it and took it to the Luigi Cagnolaro Centre for Recovery and Rehabilitation for Marine Turtles in Pescara.
After months of treatment and following healthy blood tests, it was released back into the sea on Thursday. Once in the water, it started swimming and received a round of applause from rescuers and others present to see its return to the sea.
So far in 2015, 40 loggerhead sea turtles have been recovered along the beaches of Abruzzo and Molise.
