A Perugia court on Wednesday reduced to 20 years the jail term of a man who killed his wife by stabbing her 36 times. Salvatore Parolisi had been convicted of murdering his wife, Melania Rea, at Civitella del Tronto April 18, 2011, and sentenced to 30 years in the original, fast-track trial. But in February the supreme court ordered the Perugia appeals court to recalculate the sentence after cancelling the aggravating factor of cruelty from the conviction. The supreme court said Parolisi killed his wide during an "explosion of anger," after she found out he was being unfaithful.
It said the 36 stab wounds indicated that he wanted to inflict "violent pain" with the aim of killing her, but it added that "the mere reiteration of blows (albeit considerable) cannot be considered" as an aggravating factor of cruelty.

Explaining the decision to convict Salvatore Parolisi for murdering his wife Melania Rea at Civitella del Tronto April 18, 2011, the supreme court said it happened during an "explosion of anger," borne out of a row "between the two spouses" and due to "confirmed marital infidelity" by the man.
The 36 stab wounds Parolisi inflicted on his wife indicate that he wanted to inflict "violent pain" with the aim of killing her, the court said.
But the supreme court said "the mere reiteration of blows (albeit considerable) cannot be considered" as an aggravation of the cruelty he already showed, and therefore not deserving consequently a heavier prison sentence.
