(ANSA) Reggio Calabria, March 3 - A man who made repeated
telephone threats against anti-mafia prosecutors has died before
he could stand trial, apparently from natural causes, police
said Tuesday.
Francesco Gennaro Triolo, a 47-year-old labourer, was caught
by police making the threatening phone calls to police
switchboards after police rigged up closed-circuit television
cameras in front of public phone boxes he used.
According to his brother Giuseppe, Triolo was mentally ill
but police found evidence of contacts he had with 'Ndrangheta,
the Calabrian version of the Sicilian Mafia.
One of the main targets of the calls was Nicola Gratteri, a
prosecutor leading the fight against 'Ndrangheta.
Giuseppe Triolo also was tried on charges of making
threatening calls to a judge but was acquitted.
