Police on Tuesday arrested 13
alleged members of a mafia clan engaged in a turf war with rival
groups for control of the drugs trade and extortion rackets
around the Puglia capital.
The suspects were said to belong to the powerful Campanale
clan based in the San Girolamo neighbourhood of Bari.
They included Leonardo Campanale, 45, and his 28-year-old
son Felice, respectively the son and grandson of the mobster
Felice Campanale who was killed in a mafia ambush in summer
2013.
In total 11 people were taken to jail and two placed under
house arrest on various charges including mafia and
drugs-related crimes, illegal weapons possession, possession of
stolen goods, usury and extortion.
Investigations began following the assassination of Mario
Rizzo, the leader of a rival clan, in Rutigliano near Bari in
December 2012.
