Giorgio Squinzi, the president
of Italian industrial employers' confederation Confindustria,
expressed surprise on Monday over news reports claiming that the
head of the union's Sicilian chapter Antonello Montante is under
investigation as part of a Mafia probe.
"I am surprised by news reports concerning Antonello
Montante, who has long decided to side against the Mafia,
risking first-hand", Squinzi told ANSA.
Rome daily La Repubblica reported on Monday that
prosecutors in Caltanissetta have opened an investigation on
Montante after statements by three former Mafia members who are
now testifying for the State.
The newspaper did not provide further details on the probe.
