Police on Friday discovered
the body of an 87-year-old woman who died in the course of a
home invasion in the town of Pace del Mela, near the Sicilian
city of Messina.
Caterina Basile had been bound hand and foot to her bed
and suffocated she was gagged with rags, possibly to prevent her
screaming.
Police said the premises were in a shambles, her furniture
knocked to the ground and her closets turned inside out.
Basile's relatives alerted police after they were unable to
contact her.
Law enforcement is seeking those responsible.
