Milan prosecutors on Wednesday completed an investigation into 13 Syrian nationals on suspicion of terrorism and other charges in connection with incidents in Syria and in the Milan area in 2011 and 2012.
Most of the suspects are in Syria or other countries.
Six of the 13 are accused of criminal association with intent to commit acts of international terrorism. They have left Italy to fight the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Among the six are electrician Haisam Sakhanh and a man called Ammar Bacha, both residents of the Milan-area town of Cologno Monzese and both of whom left to fight in Syria in 2012.
Investigators have identified Sakhanh, also known as Abu Omar, as being among the Syrian rebel combatants who were filmed while executing Assad army soldiers in a New York Times video published in September 2013. The 13 are accused of aggravated bodily harm and aggravated damages in connection with a series of attacks on pro-Assad Syrian nationals in Milan and the area towns of Busto Garolfo, Brugherio, Cologno Monzese, and Parabiago.
The attacks include one on a bar in Cologno Monzese, whose pro-Assad owners were seriously wounded and the premises wrecked with sticks and iron pipes.
