A former municipal pharmacy
executive in the town of Nardò in the southern Puglia region on
Wednesday confessed to embezzling 130,000 euros to buy
scratch-off lottery cards.
Giuseppe Spano reportedly broke into tears while admitting
to his passion for instant lotto, which led him in time to lose
his family and destroy his professional life.
"It got to the point where I was gambling up to 15,000
euros a month, because I was buying six packets of scratchcards
a day," he told prosecutors who were investigating him for
embezzlement.
The money went missing between February and November 2014,
causing pharmacy accountants to report him.
