Police arrested 19 suspected
members of the Sacra Corona Unita (SCU) mafia in their native
Puglia on Monday, suspected of illegal narcotics trafficking,
illegal weapons possession, extortion and robbery, ANSA sources
said.
The arrested are allegedly members of the De Tommasi-Notaro
clan, whose fugitive boss, Sergio Notaro, was arrested on
December 1 and is currently in prison.
Investigators in the case said the clan was undergoing an
internal feud over leadership and control of the drug trade and
other illegal activities in northern Salento.
During the course of the investigations which began in
2012, police made various drug and weapons seizures, as well as
seizing 8,000 euro which investigators say was the result of
usury.
The SCU is Italy's fourth and least powerful mafia after
Sicily's Cosa Nostra, Calabria's 'Ndrangheta and Campania's
Camorra.
