Five men were arrested
Friday in the Sicilian city of Caltanissetta on suspicion of
plotting an attack on a Carabinieri paramilitary police officer.
The suspects, who are being probed for receiving stolen
goods and illegal weapons possession, allegedly plotted to
intimidate the officer after an investigation he was conducting
got too close for comfort.
The officer suspected the five of stealing property from a
farm owned by Maria Antonietta Dell'Edera and Katia La Placa,
that used to employ Tony Ciavarello, son-in-law of jailed Mafia
"boss of bosses" Toto' Riina.
The property was recently seized by a court.
Those arrested are Michele Giarratana, 40, whose rap sheet
includes fraud and using false ID to rip off local businesses; a
44-year-old shepherd named Maurizio Porcello, 18-year-old
Salvatore Macaluso, Salvatore Faulisi, 38, and Raimondo Scalzo,
32.
