Even as disaster-hit areas
struggle to dig themselves out of recent floods and mudslides,
Italy faces a fresh wave of storms and torrential rains at the
weekend, forecasters said Friday.
Intense rainfall of up to 100mm in 24 hours is expected in
the regions of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy,
Piedmont, Sardinia and Tuscany, according to forecasts.
In Ferrara, the mayor on Friday ordered residents near the
Po river to evacuate their homes, while in Carrara - which
suffered a catastrophic flood when the Carrione river burst its
bank November 5 - residents have been told to evacuate
ground-floor homes and businesses as of 8am on Saturday.
The regions of Tuscany and Liguria - where an elderly
couple was crushed to death by a mudslide November 10 - were
placed on high alert ahead of possible storms and torrential
rains.
