Italy's environment ministry
announced via Twitter on Thursday that is has put a stop on the
practice of radio-collaring the bear population.
"The Environment Ministry has stopped the radio-collaring of
bears during anesthetization. A clarification is needed after
#Daniza", the ministry tweeted, referring to the recent deadly
botched capture of a bear hunted after cuffing a mushroom
hunter.
The brown bear, Daniza, died after having received an
accidental overdose of tranquillizers when forestry personal in
Trentino attempted to capture her.
The bear's death triggered widespread outrage with many
questioning why officials wanted to tranquilize and capture the
mother bear.
