(ANSA) Oppido Palmi, July 10 - A Calabrian bishop suspended
indefinitely religious processions in his diocese Thursday after
a group of faithful following a statue of the Madonna
purportedly gave a bow of respect to a notorious crime boss.
Monsignor Giuseppe Acquaro, bishop of Oppido-Palmi,
announced the ban to a meeting of Diocesan priests in the town
of Rizziconi held to discuss the furore that erupted after a
Carabinieri paramilitary police officer denounced the July 2
incident in which parishioners allegedly bowed in front of the
house of Peppe Mazzagatti, an 82-year-old kingpin of the
'Ndrangheta, the more powerful Calabrian sister of the Cosa
Nostra.
