E-commerce rose 41.7% in Italy in May compared to a year previously, ISTAT said Tuesday in its latest retail sales report.
At the same time, shop business fell by 18.8%, the stats agency said.
This followed a 28.2% rise in e-commerce in April.
Large scale distribution fell by 4.4% in May.
Supermarket business increased by 5.6%.
Street seller sales and other sales outside stores fell by 23%.
Italy is set for a record recession due to the coronavirus this year.
The European Commission said Tuesday that GDP will shrink 11.2% this year.
It will rebound 6.1% next year, the EC said.
