The Terzo Valico rail link
between Genoa and Novi Ligure is "fundamental for the whole
Italian system," Deputy Transport and Infrastructure Minister
Edoardo Rixi said Tuesday.
The project has been pushed by the rightwing populist League,
of which Rixi is a prominent member, but has been put on the
back burner so far because of opposition from its government
partner, the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S).
Rixi said it was "the most important of the major public
works".
He said the project had to make up for lost time because "in
a normal country a project that dates back to 1992 would have
been finished 10 years ago".
Genoa Archbishop Angelo Bagnasco also weighed into the debate
on Tuesday saying that not completing the work would be
"suicide".
