A reported 23 billion euros worth
of taxes have been evaded in Sicily over the past eight years,
Antonio Fiumefreddo, head of Riscossione Sicilia, the regional
agency in charge of tax collection, said on Tuesday.
Fiumefreddo said that tax evasion mostly occurs in five
sectors - the sale of meat and fish, construction, tenders and
transportation - "infiltrated by the mafia".
"It's not true, as someone claims, that the Mafia pays
taxes, it doesn't pay them at all", he concluded.
