Marine transport company
D'Amico International Shipping (DIS) on Tuesday launched two
eco-ships at the Hyundai Vinashin shipyard in Vietnam, expanding
its fleet to over 50 units.
The refined products and vegetable oils transporter said
the Cielo di Ulsan and High Trader vessels are designed to boost
energy efficiency and reduce emissions, in line with
international standards that will come into force in 2025.
The two ships, worth over $62 million, are part of a $755
million investment plan that DIS launched in 2012.
"They are ships that are ready for two oil companies, one
American and one European with whom we have relations for more
than 30 years, and that replace two that are currently in
service," said CEO Marco Fiori.
"With the addition of another 12 eco-ships currently under
construction by 2018, we will further consolidate our
competitive position on the global shipping market," he added.
DIS is benefiting from strong global demand for the
transportation of refined petroleum products, a trend supported
by a drop in crude oil prices and the transfer of refineries
from consumer regions to oil-producing ones.
Fiori said he expects the company to see strong growth in
the fourth quarter of the year, as cold weather in the northern
hemisphere will fuel consumption, he said.
