Riccardo Monti, the president of the ICE-Italian Trade Promotion Agency, said Wednesday that he was confident Milan Expo 2015 will lead to a big boost for Italian exports. "I'm very hopeful," Monti told an ANSA forum when asked about the upcoming World Fair. "Italy is a leader in the agro-food sector in terms of the quality and uniqueness of its products, but it isn't in quantitative terms. So Expo can be an opportunity to push a sector that has significant growth potential".

Monti added that Italy's exports to Russia will be "at least 1.5 billion euros" down this year, following EU sanctions over the crisis in Ukraine. "The greatest problem is the concentration of the negative effects of the crisis on some operators who have targeted that market," Monti said.

Despite this,  Monti  said that Italian exports will end the year up to 4% higher than in 2014, adding that 2015 should be a good year too.

"Italy will end the year with export growth of between 3% and 4%," Monti told the forum. "The expectations for next year are very good," he said, adding that the weak euro was helping.

"The balance of trade is doing even better," he commented. "It'll end the year with record surplus".

Monti also said investigations like the mafia probe that is currently rocking the city of Rome do not affect the international public's love of Italy and its products.

"I don't know if the recent news about mafia investigations has a negative impact on our exports abroad," Monti told an ANSA forum. "What I know is that newspapers (and their stories) soon pass and what remains is the love for Italy," he said.
