High-speed trains from four major northern Italian cities will connect to Rome's Leonardo da Vinci international airport under a new plan to make travel easier, the head of Italy's Ferrovie dello Stato(FS) rail company said Tuesday.
As well, a new high-speed link with Rome will begin operations on Sunday, Chief Executive Officer Michele Mario Elia said.
The plan will see high-speed Frecciargento trains coming and going between the international airport that is best known as Fiumicino, and the cities of Venice, Padua, Bologna, Florence as well as Rome.
He also announced that the privatization of the State railway agency should be completed by the first half of 2016.
"We continued to follow our timetable," Elia said at a presentation of the new high-speed rail links plan.
A task force looking into plans to sell shares in several Italian government holdings, including the post office, the national air traffic agency, as well as the railway company, is scheduled to meet on Wednesday.
Elia said that is expected to provide some "clarity" on the privatization plan. "2015 will be the year in which they will work hard to finalize everything," he said.
