Exhibits across Italy are showcasing
the work of a variety of artists ranging from British sculptor
Antony Gormley in Florence to photographer Steve McCurry in
Turin.
Many of the shows have opened during the week, which is
dedicated to museums in Italy (March 5-10).
MODENA - The show "Pop Therapy. The revolutionary spirit of
Fiorucci's cards" running from March 9 until August 25 at the
local Museo della Figurina, the museum of trading cards, pays
homage to the genius of fashion designer Elio Fiorucci.
Curated by Diana Baldon and Francesca Fontana, the exhibition
is divided into six sections, documenting the success of the
album Fiorucci Stickers, published in 1984 by Edizioni Panini,
which sold over 25 million trading card packs.
A total of 200 trading cards are on display.
BERGAMO - The Gallery of modern and contemporary art in Bergamo
(GAMeC) is showcasing 150 artworks spanning four decades in the
first major retrospective in Italy on Birgit Jurgenssen (Vienna
1949-2003), a leading exponent of the international feminist
avant-garde movement.
The show "Io sono", or I am, runs from March 7 through May 19
and is curated by Natascha Burger e Nicole Fritz.
TURIN - The passion for reading visually interpreted by a
great photographer is the focus of the exhibit "Steve McCurry.
Reading" on March 9-July 1 at the Corte Medievale of Palazzo
Madama in Turin.
The exhibit is curated by Biba Giachetti with the
participation of novelist Roberto Cotroneo.
It showcases 65 photos, with a literary text, each portraying
people of all ages from around the world who are snapped in the
most diverse contexts as they are reading a book.
"Ecologies of Loss" is the first Italian retrospective on
Indian artist Ravi Agarwal, scheduled at PAV Parco Arte Vivente
from March 9 until June 9.
An artist, photographer, environmentalist, writer and
curator, Agarwal explores in his work issues including ecology,
society, urban and rural areas, among others.
ROME - The Casa del Cinema, or house of cinema, on March
4-14 hosts an exhibit on great filmmaker Federico Fellini.
"Fellini- A personal regard by Vittoriano Rastelli" is
curated by Alessandra Zucconi and Andrea Mazzini.
A total of 30 black-and-white photos by Rastelli portray the
complex personality of the man and artist.
Meanwhile Palazzo Velli on March 8-28 hosts an exhibit
dedicated to photographer Roberto Polillo.
The show focuses in particular on two projects that were
central to his career - "Future Cities Visions and Jazz Icons of
the '60s" - through themes that were most dear to the
photographer, notably jazz music, computer science, travelling
and the evolution of cities.
FLORENCE - A retrospective on British artist Antony Gormley
will run through May 26 at the Uffizi Gallery.
"Essere", or being, which was inaugurated on February 26,
presents a selection of sculptures by Gormley made in different
materials and sizes, including 'Passage', a maxi installation
with a 12-meter-long tunnel in black steel.
Palazzo Pitti meanwhile is hosting "Lessico femminile. Le
donne tra impegno e talento 1861-1926" (Women's lexicon. Women
between commitment and talent 1861-1926).
The show, curated by Simonella Condemi, runs through May 25.
The exhibit pays homage to the female universe between the
1800s and 1900s through artworks, objects and photographs
focusing on the role of women in different fields, from science
to literature and art.
