Italy wants to change the migrant
landing rules of the EU's anti-migrant trafficking Sophia
mission, not close it, Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi
said Wednesday.
A European summit last June urged member States to fully
share all burdens, the foreign ministry said.
April 2015 accords on the other hand, it said, had envisaged
that migrants should be always disembarked in Italy.
"Italy has never asked for the closure of Sophia," Moavero
said.
It asked for the rules relating to the disembarkation of
persons saved at sea should be changed in rigorous and dutiful
coherence with the conclusions of the European Council of June
2018".
