Rome prosecutors on Monday said they have closed a sweeping investigation into alleged wrongdoing related to civil-service procurement agency CONSIP.
Seven people, including former Sports Minister Luca Lotti, former Carabinieri General Commander Tullio Del Sete, Carabinieri General Emanuele Saltalamacchia and entrepreneur Carlo Russo risk going on trial.
Ex-minister Lotti is suspected of allegedly aiding and abetting and violating judicial secrecy. He is accused in particular of tipping off former CONSIP CEO Luigi Marroni about a probe into alleged corruption regarding agency contracts.
Del Sette is accused of violating judicial secrecy, Saltamacchia of aiding and abetting the operation, Russo of illicitly lobbying in exchange for money, ex-government advisor Filippo Vannoni of aiding and abetting and a former high-ranking official with Carabinieri NOE environmental police, Gian Paolo Scafarto, of revealing classified information.
Scafarto, together with a former Carabinieri colleague, Alessandro Sessa, is also accused of attempting to throw the investigation off track.
Rome prosecutors also asked to shelve the case against the father of ex-premier and center-left Democratic Party (PD) leader Matteo Renzi, Tiziano, who was accused of alleged influence-peddling in the case.
Scafarto allegedly wrongly attributing a wiretap in the CONSIP probe concerning Tiziano Renzi.
