Premier Matteo Renzi responded to German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble's statement that the EU isn't checking countries' budgets by saying "the EU should start by checking the German budget because the German surplus is creating problems for the whole of Europe". He said "let's not do like with immigration where they have left us on our own and they are building walls". Renzi has on several occasions warned about the impact on the European economy of Germany's trade surplus.
